Matt Pinel and Alice Ibitson are the new JPA Mixed Doubles champions after beating Wendy Ritzema and Gary Cowburn 13-2 in the final. It ended Dawn Buckley and Geoffroy Buffetrille’s hopes of winning the title for a third year in a row – they went out in the qualifying round.

A record 21 teams took part in the championship, more than double the number of entries the previous year. Each pair played five games in the qualifying round in which the only team to emerge unbeaten were Ritzema and Cowburn. Among their victims in a 13-10 defeat were the pair that went on to beat them in the final.

In the quarter-finals Pinel and Ibitson beat Brian Harris and Judy Dove 13-8 while the eventual runners-up saw off Sid and Marion Simkin 13-2. Meanwhile Ross Payne and Brigitte Ibitson beat Laurent Pellaton and Karolina Zaorska 13-3 while the only Guernsey pair in the competition, Seb and Delphine Renaud, went down 13-8 to Mark Nicol and Lydia Beck.

In the semi-finals Ritzema and Cowburn overcame a disastrous start, conceding six points on the first and to Brigitte Ibitson and Ross Payne, but fought back to win 13-9. In the other semi Alice Ibitson and Matt Pinel beat Nicol and Beck 13-8.
