Callum Stewart, Andy Bellamy and Matt Pinel are this year’s Island Triples Champions.
They won convincingly 13-3 in the final against two of the trio who they lost to in the 2013 final; Michel Morel and Chris Romeril who this year were partnered by Chris’ son Jake.
In equal third were the two losing semi finalist teams; Brian Harris with David and Brigitte Ibitson who lost 7-13 to the eventual winners and Ross Payne, Craig Kelly and Joey Le Clech who were beaten 8-10 by Michel, Jake and Chris. As in the qualifying rounds, the semi finals were timed games. Michel, Jake and Chris started well and took a 9-1 lead. Moving on to 10-3 up it was looking like a sure win. However Ross, Joey and Craig (who was playing in his first Island Championship) began to close the gap. At 10-8 their allotted time was up. One more end was available and Joey played an excellent first boule. However Jake Romeril fired it out, sending the cochonnet out of bounds as well to make it a ‘dead end’ and thus put his team through to the final; a tough ending for Ross Payne’s team who were also third last year.
Two of the seventeen teams who took part won all four of their qualifying games. Brian Harris, David and Brigitte Ibitson with a net +28 and Ross Payne, Craig Kelly and Joey Le Clech with +26. No less than five teams won 3 of their four; Michel, Chris and Jake on +25 and Callum, Andy and Matt on +20. Ian and Penny Foster with Gerald Rolland just missed out on a semi final place with +18 while
Also winning three were Ken Vibert, Linda Taylor and Lawrence Rondel +14, Lyndon and Joan Lewis with Ron Le Herissier +2.
David and Solange De La Cour were playing in their first ever JPA championships with Jake Day, whom they had not met until the competition. While they did not win any games, they did give a scare to the runners up who found themselves 5-9 down before coming back to win the game!
