Frank Morel sent his congratulations to Carrefour PC, the first Jersey club to qualify for the finals of the EuroCup in November.

All we can say to that is "Hear Hear".

They finished in fourth place in their group playing at Imperia on the Ligurian coast in Italy at the home of the San Giacomo Club.

The result of their first game wasn’t encouraging – a 24-7 defeat by the club representing Poland, but their second match proved crucial in the end – a narrow 17-14 win against a Ukrainian club.

The results of both the singles and triples were in effect tied but Carrefour managed to win two of the three doubles by convincing margins to edge the game.

Heavy defeats followed against the Finnish team (29-2) and against the Italian host club by 28-3, but it was the two wins against two British teams that clinched qualification – a 29-2 victory over the Scottish club, Inverleith and a 27-4 win against Wheatsheaf PC representing Wales.

It was an outstanding team performance but special mention must be made of Mark Nicol, who won five out of his six singles matches, and of Chris Romeril, who along with Mark won five out of six doubles matches.

As yet the CEP hasn’t selected a host club in France for the finals but they will take place in France at the end of November
